The mystery of uncorrupted bodies: Scientific, theological and philosophical perspectives on the incorruptibility of Saints

Ioana Stanciu
Abstract
The phenomenon of the incorrupt bodies of saints—known in Christian tradition as incorruptibility—is one of those manifestations that have fascinated both the world of faith and the world of science. From early accounts in antiquity to modern documentation, the phenomenon continues to raise questions regarding the relationship between the spiritual and the material, the meaning of the body, and the effects of holiness on matter. This article approaches the subject from a threefold perspective: scientific, through an analysis of natural preservation processes and modern forensic studies; theological, by interpreting incorruptibility as a sign of holiness and an anticipation of the universal resurrection; and philosophical, by exploring the meaning of the body as a transfigurable reality and the profound connection between spirit and matter. This interdisciplinary analysis seeks to answer the question: is incorruptibility a biological phenomenon with physicochemical explanations, a miraculous act of grace, or both—in a way that transcends the conventional boundaries of knowledge?
